When doing your magic act and you make a mistake, do you admit the mistake or act as if it was supposed to happen? Many beginner magicians ask this question and every professional magician has made a mistake in their shows at one point in their career. But how we handle it can vary depending on the situation and the trick.
​
As magicians, we strive to make our shows run smoothly and error free. It takes a lot work and practice to achieve a flawless performance. There are some instances that a magic effect does not go as planned and may expose the secret of how it’s done.
​
Most of the time, the audience won’t notice the mistake if you don’t acknowledge it in the first place. The audience does not know your act nor what magic tricks you are going to perform. In the beginning of your magic show, you do not give them a list of tricks you plan on presenting. Everything you do should always be a surprise and flow into the next routine.
​
The performer is the only person who knows where the routine is going, so if something goes wrong, they can take another path to direct the audience towards and they will not notice any difference.
​
Sometimes there is nothing we can do to cover up a mistake with certain magic tricks. The viewers will notice the blunder and may feel bad for the performer. You start to feel the sweat trickle down your forehead and nervousness sets in.

This is an uneasy feeling and quite embarrassing while performing a live magic show. A suggestion is to admit to making a mistake but make a joke or funny comment about it and then move on to an easier effect to build confidence back up. 

Funny Jokes To Say

Having a couple of funny jokes or lines to say or a comment of sincerity that you value your audience’s entertainment experience will help relieve the tension. It could also go over bigger than the intended performance while making you appear humble, honest, and more endearing. Then, continue on with the rest of the show as if it wasn’t important and nobody will care if you did the effect or not. Remember, the show must go on!

How To Avoid Making Mistakes

When a performing artist wants to incorporate a new routine into their act, it is wise to know the routine backwards and forwards. This is achieved through the practice and rehearsal phases. 
​

Practice Phase
​

The practice phase is the training process in order to figure out the various problems that can occur. You might discover a variety of “outs” by going through this process. Go through every routine and look for break points where things can go wrong. Then figure out an alternative way to proceed for each point in each of the routines.

It will make it much easier to have smooth and consistent performances as well as help avoid messing up an effect. Then move on to the rehearsal phase.

Rehearsal Phase
​

The rehearsal phase is doing the entire act or show as if there is an audience watching. When you are rehearsing the new routine, try out the variations of the outs. It will allow you to be comfortable with the handling of mistakes that could possibly arise in a live performance. Go through the entire performance without stopping. You will transition from one routine to the next.

If a mistake happens, keep going. After you go through the entirety of the performance, evaluate everything you just learned and ask yourself questions. Did you make any mistakes? Did you recover from them? What can or needs to be avoided? Did the transition from one routine to the next move smoothly? Are there any alternative handlings of the routines that were discovered?

To make the rehearsal phase easier, it can be broken down into sections. Pick one, two, or three routines that are giving you trouble. Go through the same procedure of performing from beginning to end.

Accidents Do Happen

During a performance accidents may occur. This raises the question “Do I admit to the mistake?” or “Do I move on?” Of course this will depend on greatly of how obvious the mistake is, can you recover from it and continue the routine, or own it and move on to the next without skipping a beat.

There have been times that I would bump into my table and props would fall or tip over exposing the secret. I simply picked it up and tossed it to the side as if nothing was wrong and didn’t do that particular trick.
​
I have even fallen off the stage or down the steps of the stage on occasions. Sometimes you have to make a joke out of it, laugh, and move on. No one really cares.
​
Remember, this is your show, your performance, your act. You orchestrate it and you are the conductor. The audience is there to go on the ride and your show goes where you want it to go.

Being a children’s entertainer for parties for over 30 years, I have seen fun games and activities for kids to keep busy and entertained. I have also had my share of not so good birthday parties and disastrous magic shows because of all the chaos. But what was the main problem some parties were so out of control and others were wonderful?

When a group of kids get together for a birthday party, it’s like stirring up a fire ant pile. The kids run around screaming and yelling, jumping on sofas, and bumping into things.

​Children have a staggering amount of energy especially when they are so excited to see their friends show up to a party. It’s such a natural thing for some of them to feel that way while others tend to be shy and standoffish not participating in any sort of amusement.

7 Creative Birthday Party Ideas​

I have seen so many great creative birthday party ideas parents have engineered for a memorable birthday party for their child. It is very easy to take some classic games for kids and devise a new game with a theme to occupy the children during the party time and exhaust some of their energy levels.
​
However, children do not like to lose. An option is simply have small prizes to give away to all the kids that did not win to avoid upset or crying children at the party and save the bigger prizes for the winners.

Musical Chairs
​

Musical chairs is a classic game everyone still enjoy event the grownup love to play. So why not allow the parents play instead and have the kids to remove the chairs or stop the music.

​Some children prefer to do arts and crafts instead of playing a game. There are so many ways to be creative with this one. Get printouts for coloring, foam shapes, glitter, stickers, and washable glue sticks.​
For a magic theme party, kids can decorate top hats which would also be used a goody bags or loot bags, magic wands, or jumbo playing cards with stickers, markers, foam star cutouts, and bunny rabbit cutouts.

Clown theme parties kids can color a funny clown face. Decorate plastic clown shoes and given way as goody bags as well. Make to include clown noses into the mix of fun.

Unicorn theme parties; print out coloring pages; decorate the horn of a unicorn, rainbows, and stars. Get little bottles and fill them with glitter and call it magic dust or fairy dust.

When customers search for magicians near me, they are really looking for an entertainer who will show up and on time. But to be better organized takes a lot of work and discipline especially for anyone first starting out in business.

One of the worst things an entertainer can do is double book themselves. They look unprofessional and unorganized with their life. I have made that same mistake only once.

It was the most awful feeling in the world. I was so embarrassed. How could I allow this to happen?

I didn’t check my calendar. Simple right? 
​

Appointment Scheduling Solution
​

I have some checks and balances in place that help me stay on track and know exactly when and where I will be at any given time.

I actually use two calendars. I use the calendar on my cell phone and one in a daily planner that I write down my daily schedule and weekly schedule. This is how I stay more organized with all my shows. This is truly the heart of the business.

Cell phones and Google Calendar Sync help to schedule other appointments which can be beneficial. Cell phones have reminders you can set up for upcoming appointments. It has a section for notes to include any additional information like the name of the contact person, address, phone number, what kind of party and what style of magic will I be performing. What the name of the birthday child is, who is the guest of honor, what is the name of the event.

The beauty of this is that I have all the information when I am at the show, so I don’t forget names and who I need to give recognition to. I can look at my phone and I have all the information at my fingertips.

Having a daily planner is mainly the checks and balance part. Although I have more information in my cell phone about the show details, the daily planner just has basic information such as the show time, contact name, location (city), and how much the magic show cost.

This could be considered double work, but when I book a magic show for a client, it is imperative that I make all the effort to have them on my schedule, so there is no doubt in my mind of whether or not I will be doing a birthday party show or corporate party show.
​

Create A Planning Schedule And Plan Ahead
​

Creating a schedule in a planner and on the phone calendar helps to plan ahead for other appointments and obligations.

If the appointment is written down in one location but not the other, then it raises a question to double check with invoices and verify with the client to make sure they are on the schedule.

That would be a lot easier and less hassle than getting double booked.

 In order to customize a theme for a magic show that has a powerful message, I think back to one of my favorite routine to perform is the Chinese Linking Rings. I got my first set of linking rings magic trick when I was about 16 years old. It was Christmas and my girlfriend’s brother gave them to me as a Christmas present along with some magic cards and other easy to do magic tricks. He was the one who helped me in discovering magic because he was a magician and showed me a magic trick that sparked my curiosity and interest.

Since then, I have spent years on studying variations of the linking rings routine like through the Tarbell Course In Magic by Harlan Tarbell. One of my greatest mentors is Jeff McBride and his video series on Stage Magic. He taught his presentation of the rings in his video. Then there’s Shoot Ogawa and his Ninja Rings routine, a close up magic version or street magic. But there was one magician by the name of Joshua Messado. He created the Messado Rings, also close up magic, which are completely beautiful.

But it was his presentation and what he said that stood out most to me. It’s not always about the magic trick itself that creates the magic. It’s the words or the story that leaves an impression. To quote him in his presentation is, “If you believe in yourself, you can accomplish anything, even the Impossible”.

The Magic Of Believing

WOW! That is a powerful message! A gift of magic that I have adopted into my presentations of other magic tricks for kid’s parties to relay the importance of believing in oneself and how powerful it is to achieve any goal that is set. Another way to say it is, believe in yourself and you will be unstoppable.

I have layered my magic show for kids with some subtle positive messages that create good habit forming for children and the parents are impressed by the message as well.

Phrases like “please”, “thank you”, and “I’m sorry” are powerful and magical as well as “you’re welcome”. These “magical phrases” make a huge impact that reinforces basic etiquette. They instill good habits and proper manners. 
​

Believing More Creates Wonder and Imagination
​

In one of Jeff McBride’s videos, he talked about as a magician; we have to believe in the magic that we are doing more than the audience. We have to believe for the both of us.
​
In order for me to present my magic show for kids and adults, I have to believe that I am doing real magic. Even for corporate entertainment I have to have the same mindset. It helps to create the wonder and capture the imagination.

Magicians and entertainers of any kind put so much time and thought that goes into creating an entertainment show that impacts the audience with lasting memories. It is another skill that takes a lot of work and practice in order to achieve these results.

I constantly analyze my show and pick apart the layers to be able to paint a beautiful picture of inspiration and thoughts by using my words effectively.

So, if you are an entertainer reading this, I hope you have found some inspiration to really take a deep look into how to scripting your show and how phrases impact others.

If you are a parent reading this, it is the little things we say or do that can encourage children and adults to achieve their goals and dreams by believing in them so they can believe in themselves.

​Then we take the courage to believe that we made the right decisions. Whether we made the decision to drive a car, fall in love, build friendships, or even making an investment.
